What is Lingua Receptiva?

Lingua Receptiva is a form of multilingual communication in which each speaker uses a different language, but each speaker has sufficient listening skills in the other speaker’s language for them to be able to understand each other. Speakers use their receptive competencies in the other language and can therefore understand each other.

Lingua receptiva is used in business, education and in the private sphere. In addition, lingua receptiva forms an interesting phenomenon in the current multilingualism debate within the European Union, because this concept can be an instrument in achieving the multilingual goals that have been set by the European Commission.

The employment of lingua receptiva is understandable when you have a look at the advantages it offers in comparison to those when you use of a foreign language or lingua franca, like English. The advantages have to do with the needed skills in a foreign language, but as well with the ease of the communication and with the importance of showing your own identity.

Lingua Receptiva in the media

Much has been published in the field of lingua receptiva. Since the introduction of this concept in 2009, a growing interest can be noticed. In academics, articles have appeared, but as well journals with a broader public have paid attention to this concept. The examples given here have all appeared in Dutch or Flamish media and are therefore available in Dutch.
